Sais-tu que la main que tu tiens dans la tienne

s’ouvre en une corolle à cinq pétales

sous la chaleur de ton soleil

 

Sais-tu que cet infime creux

 

au milieu de ta paume

peut contenir assez d’eau

pour désaltérer

un oiseau exténué

 

assez d’eau

pour qu’une mouche traquée

puisse s’arrêter là

et laver ses ailes

 

Et sais-tu

que cet infime creux

est fait pour recevoir

un premier baiser

 

A SLIGHT HOLLOW

 

Do you know the hand you’ re holding

opens into a five-petal corolla

in the warmth of your sun

 

Do you know the slight hollow

at the center of the palm

can hold enough water

to quench the thirst

of an exhausted bird

 

enough water for

a hounded fly to stop

and scrub its wings

 

So slight a hollow

fated to hold

a first kiss
